Kevin Root eCommerce Best Practices Presentation 2008

eCommerce Best Practices Presentation delivered by Kevin in 2008

What I do: I am a nationally-recognized automotive eCommerce subject matter expert. I use first-hand experience to understand the automotive eBusiness landscape and leverage that experience to successfully bring new products or services to market. By understanding the industry from both dealers’ and consumers’ perspectives, I have been very successful in innovating new products and services and providing guidance and consulting to companies including: Lexus, Ford, Volkswagen, Audi and many others.

What I do best: I am a problem solver. I am very good at uncovering the root cause of a situation and then working collaboratively to develop a solution.

I am a vision guy. I can see opportunity among the noise, then validate the assumption using a specialized technique of listening to the market. I am also a leader who excels in building strong teams, providing clear goals and driving hard to execute with precision and measurement.

Where I have been: I spent nearly 10 years at the Cobalt Group holding the positions of VP of Product Strategy and Marketing for the Dealix Division, VP of Product Strategy at Cobalt’s Application Business Unit, VP and GM of Dealer Advisory Services, their for-profit training and consulting group. I was also responsible for the company’s industry-leading research on dealership and OEM eBusiness performance.

Before Cobalt I was a Product Manager, then a Product Planner at Microsoft in the CarPoint group. There I led the UsedCar Marketplace side of the business and was the creator of their lead management product DealerPoint. I also initiated the effort to create an industry wide set of standards for lead parcing still widely used today, the Automotive Document Format (ADF).

Prior to Microsoft, I was the Director of Marketing for two auto dealer groups in Washington State. At one of the groups I created a Business Development Center and sold cars both on and offline.

Early in my career I was an Account Executive for several advertising agencies in the Pacific Northwest.

What I have accomplished: I am credited for creating the world’s first Ford Dealership website in 1994 – this was 9 months before Ford Motor Company had a website. This garnered national attention as we were selling vehicles and parts globally in the day of 9600 baud connectivity.

At Microsoft I developed one of the very first dealership lead management systems, DealerPoint.

At Cobalt I created eMystery Shopping, a service that has been used by nearly every OEM and major dealer group. I also developed an industry-leading retail performance training group providing eBusiness best practices to over 4100 dealerships in 2004. This group earned Macromedia’s “Innovation and Leadership Award for Best Web-Based Training” in 2003 – the only company in the automotive industry to earn this award.

I also led Cobalt’s thought leadership and research efforts, the results of which were validated through publication in the “International Journal of Performance Improvement.”

I have posted a more complete list of the products and services I have launched or created over the past 15 years.
